Preventing the Spread of COVID-19

By Jacinda David, Owner, Just Bounce Trampoline

What is Coronavirus?  What are we doing to slow the spread of it?

At Just Bounce Trampoline Club we take the health and safety of our staff and clients very seriously.  Here is some information on what we can all do to stay healthy!

What is Covid-19?

It has been caused by a member of the coronavirus family that has never been encountered before.  It has come from animals, and many of those initially infected worked or shopped in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in downtown Huanan.

What are the symptoms this coronavirus causes?

Those affected experience coughs, flu and breathing difficulties.  In some cases, it also causes pneumonia or worse.  Recovery depends on the strength of the immune system, so vulnerable populations are most at risk.

Why is this worse than normal influenza?

The mortality rate of Covid-19 is 2% in Hubei province, the centre of the outbreak.  The mortality rate has been less elsewhere.  The mortality rate of influenza is 1% and the mortality rate of SARS was 10%.
Some experts are hypothesizing that the mortality rate of Covid-19 is much less, because many people may have such mild symptoms that they are not even seeking medical help.
The alarming difference between Covid-19 and the Flu is that there is no vaccine yet for Covid-19, so we are not as well equipped to protect our vulnerable populations.

Is the outbreak a pandemic?  Should we panic?

No.  A pandemic (according to the WHO – the World Health Organization) is “The worldwide spread of a disease”.  The spread of the virus outside of China is not an unexpected development.  The WHO has declared the outbreak a public health emergency.  The main issues are how transmissible Covid-19 is between people and what proportion become severely ill and end up in hospital.  Generally, the coronavirus appears to be hitting older people the hardest.

What can we do to prevent the spread of Coronavirus?

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, including before and after Trampoline class
  2. Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth
  3. Stay away from other people if you are coughing and sneezing
  4. Disinfect high-touch surfaces daily using a product that kills viruses
