News From Nationals

By Jacinda David, Owner, Just Bounce Trampoline

Just Bounce Trampoline had 4 athletes attend Nationals this past week! We were Lethbridge Alberta representing Team Ontario – Ty, Mariko, Carly and Laine and Coach Jacinda.

We bumped into Coach Stewart and Team Nova Scotia at the Calgary airport and had dinner together in Calgary before making the 2.5 hour drive to Lethbridge from Calgary.  The farm and flat scenery was very interesting, and we loved the fields of the bright yellow canola flowers.

Training Day went quite well, each athlete got a few turns to try out all the equipment in the gym, and right away we went into 3.5 full days of competition! Thursday night Ty competed in Synchro with partner Botond (from Pickering) and Mariko & Laine competed in synchronized trampoline as well.  Laine & Mariko finished in 6th place and qualified to move on to the final on Sunday morning as the highest standing Ontario pair. Laine also had Double-Mini Trampoline on Thursday evening and qualified through to finals sitting in 2nd place.  She stuck her first pass and was very proud of herself!

Friday morning Ty competed in Double-Mini Trampoline, and finished both of his passes successfully. Mariko also competed in her trampoline event (Level 5 16 and under women) and advanced to the final sitting in 3rd place. Mariko was the only women in the field to achieve mobility standards to move up to Level 6 based on her performance!

We had some time to sight see on Friday afternoon, so we went to Waterton Lakes National Park (on the Montana border) and rented Paddle Boards!

Saturday was a long day for our team (and Coach Jacinda’s birthday!).  Morning block warm-up (on equipment) started at 8am!  Laine & Carly competed in individual trampoline together.  Laine was the Top Ontario athlete in the level, advancing to finals in 4th place. Carly battled with nerves and fell after her 6th trick.  She finished 28th and did not advance to finals. Ty also had Trampoline competition on Friday and he completed his half-in half-out in competition for the first time! Mariko had Double-Mini Trampoline and advanced to finals in 5th place and as the top Ontario finisher.

Saturday evening the finals began and Laine was just amazing in the Double-Mini trampoline final to became the 2018 Canadian Champion!!! We had a celebratory Japanese dinner on Saturday night and went straight back to the hotel to rest up for Sundays big day!

Sunday started very early (again!) as we got ready for Laine’s Trampoline Finals and Mariko’s Trampoline and Double-Mini Trampoline finals AND Laine & Mariko’s Synchro finals. Laine and Mariko both had successful events at Individual Trampoline, with Laine finishing in 5th and Mariko as the Silver Medallist!! Both Mariko and Laine were the top Ontario women in their age groups of Level 5 Individual Trampoline! Then Mariko went on to Double-Mini Trampoline where she had an unfortunate showing and scored zero points on each of her passes. I think the long week was starting to really catch up with Mariko. Mariko and Laine also had their synchronized routine to do together and also had an incomplete routine due to a bad landing on the final skill.

Sunday afternoon was the Team Final event! Each province puts forth their top athlete in each level to compete against the other provinces! Mariko was selected as the top Level 5 Athlete from Ontario in both Trampoline and Double-Mini Trampoline! She chose to compete in Trampoline which allowed Laine to take over the Level 5 spot on the Double-Mini Trampoline! This was an exciting event full of team spirit and loud cheering throughout the whole arena! Both Laine and Mariko were successful and contributed well to the team score! The Team Ontario women finished 2nd in Trampoline and 4th in Double-Mini Trampoline!

After their exhausting day, we had a banquet Sunday night with Laser Tag and dancing!  Sunday morning we exposed the foothills of Lethbridge and then headed back to Calgary to fly home! We are so proud of Team Just Bounce and their performance at Canadian Championships this week! All 4 athletes represented with great poise and showed great determination! We are looking forward to next season for bigger and brighter things!
